On October 5th, Friends of Lanark Highlands hosted a Blanding’s Turtle FUNdraiser at Wheelers Pancake House. Participants  learned how to paint a Blanding’s Turtle with area artist Janet Beath, who offered one of her popular “Paint With Janet” events.  Would-be artists were provided with everything needed to paint — AND a pancake with sausages!

A big thanks to all who came out on Sept. 16!

September 16th saw the Paddle and Parade Party hosted by Friends of Lanark Highlands  take place at Anderson Heritage farm on Barbers Lake and at Wheelers Maple. Whether you came to Anderson Farm to watch from the spectacular hilltop view or were among the 79 people who paddled canoes, kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards, you left with an understanding of why the plan to devastate the area with massive gravel and sand pits is outrageous.

At both the Anderson Farm and Wheelers, the ceremony, wise words and drumming provided by our Algonquin supporters highlighted the event, and shared a unique perspective on living harmoniously with our environment.

Long Sault Trio and Terry Tufts entertained, along with Sarah Harmer,  who is touring with the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition. Their music added to the party atmosphere at Wheelers along with the food, baking and merchandise on offer to support future endeavors. From the giant replica of an endangered Blanding’s turtle —seen on the proposed pit site this spring— to the maple cotton candy, there was something to make everyone feel that they had participated in a special event.

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered to help in any capacity, from registering paddlers, putting up signs and directing traffic, to serving as paddlers and spectators.

Glorious weather graced the event — a final thanks to Mother Nature for providing such a perfect day.

We are in the process of assembling an online photo album of the day. Details about accessing this  gallery will appear soon on our website.

Please keep checking the website to learn about coming events for October and November.
